Chapter 2. Damped Single Degree of Freedom System

2.1 What is Damping?

What is damping?

In this section we will be mainly focusing on viscous damping which produces forces opposite to the direction of motion and is proportional to the system velocity. Damping help dissipate the vibration energy in the form of friction with the surounding medium.

Damping Idealization

A single story frame can be modeled as a single degree of freedom assuming that the story mass is concentrated in the beam. The two columns of the frame represent the source of stiffness. The dashpot element in the model represent the system damping.
